Freedom Bus Launches from Washington, DC

The Road To Freedom Bus Tour launched from Washington, DC on November 15th, 2006. This year-long, cross-country journey will include more than 80 bus stops and will travel to every state in the nation. The Road To Freedom is a project of ADA Watch and the National Coalition for Disability Rights, an alliance of hundreds of disability, civil rights and social justice organizations. The goal of the bus tour is to promote public awareness of the history of the disability rights movement leading up to passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA); to inform mainstream and disability audiences about the rolling back of disability civil rights protections in the courts; and to mobilize public support for efforts to restore the ADA.

Prior to leaving Washington, the Embassy of Croatia and the Embassy of Austria hosted more than 150 guests at a gala event to send off the Freedom Bus and riders. Riders on the first leg of this journey included Yoshiko Dart, ADAPT‘s Bobby Coward, ADA Watch/NCDR founder and president, Jim Ward — his wife and former VP/Director of Accessiblity for AOL, Debbie Fletter Ward and their two boys, Zach and Jake — and Tom Olin, whose photographs are featured in our exhibit.
